How did Crime Stoppers begin?
Crime Stoppers began in Albuquerque, New Mexico when a Canadian-born Albuquerque Police Department Detective (Greg MacAleese) reached a dead-end in a homicide investigation.
Frustrated by the lack of clues, he enlisted a local television station's co-operation in producing a re-enactment of the crime. Within seventy-two hours of the re-enactment being aired, the police received a tip that helped solve the murder.
This was the beginning of Crime Stoppers. The first chapter was officially registered in Albuquerque in 1976. There are currently over 1200 chapters worldwide operating in more than twenty countries.
Central Alberta Crime Stoppers
The Central Alberta Crime Stoppers Association was established in 1984. Since beginning, there have been more than 10000 calls, which has led to over 1000 arrests.
Since inception, law enforcement agencies throughout Central Alberta have recovered more than $2.3 million in stolen property and $3.1 million worth of illegal drugs due to information from citizens submitting tips to Crime Stoppers.
